From a medical and psychological perspective, addiction has been a persistent problem in Tanzania because of several societal, economic, and psychological variables. These include behavioural addictions like gambling, as well as issues related to the use of alcohol, prescription drugs, and cannabis. The local economy suffers significantly as a result of these issues since they can lead to increased unemployment rates,
Addictions are common in many families and among many individuals worldwide. However, they are frequently disregarded or excused as part of a person’s “personality” Many people may even be scared to report their parents, friends, children, significant other, or other members of their community due to fear of the repercussions. Parents could fear, for instance, that if their child discloses their addiction, they would be socially stigmatized in the community. If they don’t, though, the child will continue to deteriorate, which could have detrimental effects on both their future and that of future generations. As a result, the only way we can address this problem is by uniting and eliminating stigma.
Below, you will find a few ideas and strategies gathered so that you can be part of the change today!
- Educate your immediate community and children! – Develop community seminars, volunteer at organizations, recommend school-based addiction prevention programs, and show your children, friends, family, and partners material informing them of the problem’s seriousness, and encourage gambling restrictions! Your voice, participation, and contribution are more critical than you believe.
- Enforce job creation and employment, and provide activities! – Promote specific jobs if you can, strive to hire the majority, support small businesses, participate in job creation initiatives, offer or support job mentorship programs, work with groups, or conduct beneficial activities on your own! The possibilities are endless.
- Encourage your family and friends to use technology in a healthy way. Help ensure that people in your community don’t become addicted to technology by encouraging them to use it in moderation, stressing the value of social relationships, involving your loved ones in social activities, and supporting preventative initiatives at work and in schools.
