Disaster Management Volunteering and Internship

Volunteer Africa improves the preparedness and resilience of Tanzanians against natural and man-made environmental disasters. In Tanzania, disaster management is not widely understood, and communities are often ill-equipped in the event of a disaster.

Threats to Tanzanians and their property include flooding, earthquakes, landslides, and diseases such as malaria and cholera. Climate change also contributes to famine and global warming, which in turn exacerbate industrial incidents due to poor health and safety working conditions.

This program aims to educate Tanzanians and raise awareness of the significant threats they face. We work with schools and corporations to provide education on all stages, from early prevention, mitigation, and preparation to the final stages of evacuation and response. Interns are involved in both private and public institutions, helping them develop emergency plans. You evaluate risks and current systems, and create tailored, reliable evacuation plans that could save lives. First Aid and health and safety are not widely known, so as part of our disaster management training, Art in Tanzania also looks to educate the community on these topics.

Development of Emergency Plans

Work with schools and organisations, evaluate current safety precautions, and assess the most likely disaster threats according to the area. Develop emergency plans and recommend enhanced health and safety measures, as well as disaster prevention strategies.

All these tasks are relatively new in Tanzanian societies, and you can help improve people’s knowledge of everyday and future risks, as well as their solutions.

Awareness

Visit schools, conduct advocacy presentations and training sessions, educate local people about natural and man-made disasters that threaten them, advocate for health and safety, and explain and urge people to take action in emergencies.

To reach as many people as possible, school class advocacy programs are an excellent tool for disseminating information to community members.

Education and First AID/health and safety

Bring your first-aid knowledge with you, or develop it while in Tanzania. Teach this knowledge to community members, such as teachers and corporate staff, and provide invaluable information that could save lives.

Providing first aid skills is not a common practice in Tanzanian societies. You can also study and teach how to react in non-familiar situations, such as what to do if a snake or other poisonous animal bites you, which is an obvious risk in Africa.
