john2Three months ago, the House of Art in Tanzania in Dar Es Salaam opened its fair-trade shop. The shop offers jewellery, clothing, paintings, interior design, and music to support local artists who require new business strategies, unlike the usual marketplaces with tens of competitors and their artists.

John, a gardener, maintainskangas the shop during the day. He is responsible for contacting the local artists and finding the best sources for the shop. Currently, most of the shop’s customers are volunteers and tourists coming to stay at the Art House in Tanzania. In the future, though, the shop is planned to expand through online sales. At the moment, you can find some of the products on reilunetti.fi, which is a Finnish fair-trade channel. (Originally published on Oct 28, 2013)
